Russia cancels U.S. Navy visit to Russia

MOSCOW – Russia's navy said on Tuesday it had cancelled a September visit by a United States Navy frigate to a port in Russia's Far Eastern region of Kamchatka.

'At the present time it is not considered possible to accept the guided missile frigate U.S.S. Ford on a business visit,' Russia's navy said in a statement.

The navy said the visit had been planned for 5-9 September. The statement gave no further details about the reason for cancelling the visit and a Russian navy spokesman declined to comment further.

The United States last week pulled out of a planned four-nation naval exercise with Russia in the Pacific because of Russia's intervention in U.S. ally Georgia.

Fighting erupted in South Ossetia after Georgia on Aug. 7-8 tried to recapture the rebel region, sparking an international crisis as Russia mounted the biggest military deployment outside its borders since the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union.

Moscow and Washington have been trading barbs over the conflict ever since.

The United States has backed its ally Georgia and accused Russia of bullying Tbilisi after Moscow's troops occupied several towns in Georgia outside the rebel areas.
